This gene is encoded by the parapoxvirus orf virus. The encoded protein shows sequence and secondary-structure similarities to BCL2 family members.
ORFV125 can fully inhibit UV-induced DNA fragmentation, caspase activation, and cytochrome C release and thus protects cells against cell death by apoptosis. Mitochondrial localization of the protein is required for this. The viral protein can inhibit the UV-induced activation of the pro-apoptotic BCL2 family members BAX and BAK.
