Cell death is an essential aspect of animal development and homeostasis. Like cell proliferation, cell death is tightly controlled in its activation and execution (for exceptions see: accidental cell death, anastasis; for mechanisms permitting escape from cell death under certain circumstances see also: Blebbishields).
Apart from biochemical processes taking place in the dying cell, execution ultimately also involves the orderly removal of cell debris. Processes of cell death and cell proliferation act to keep cell numbers in tissues and organs at appropriate levels. Aberrant cell death processes may underlie many human diseases including cancers, autoimmune, neurodegenerative and immunodeficiency disorders (Baehrecke et al, 2002).
