[BCL2 associated x protein] This 21 kDa protein was identified in a screen for proteins capable of interacting with BCL2, a protein that is able to repress cell death by apoptosis (Oltvai et al, 1993). The term BCL2L4 [BCL2-like-4] has been used synonymously for BAX.
BAX is a member of the BCL2 protein family that contains the BCL2 homology domains BH1, BH2, and BH3. The protein can homodimerize through its BH3 domain and forms heterdodimers with BCL2 through its BH1 and BH2
