also: Cellular reprogramming, cell reprogramming, Somatic cell reprogramming (for overview see also: Takahashi, 2014). The general term reprogramming is used to describe the generation of cells with characteristics of embryonic stem cells from terminally differentiated cells (somatic cells). This process essentially involves the erasure and redirection of developmental programs responsible for the special phenotypes of somatic cell types and can be achieved by various methods. In all methods, the efficiency of reprogramming is very low, suggesting that many aspects of reprogramming pathways still need to be elucidated. Most of the terms used in this field refer to the experimental conversion of one cell type
