orf virus (OV; abbr. also ORFV), is an epitheliotropic DNA parapoxvirus that affects sheep and goats (Spyrou and Valiakos, 2015), causing acute cutaneous pustular lesions or ecthyma contagiosum. It also orf virus als infects some other animal species and causes a disease known commonly as contagious pustular dermatitis, scabby mouth, sore mouth (Hosamani et al, 2009). Humans, in particular those exposed to infected animals, can also be infected (Haig and Mercer, 1998; Fleming et al, 2015; Thurman and Fitch, 2015). The NZ2 strain (OV NZ2) encodes a protein of 14.7 kDa that is transcribed abundantly early in infection. The OV NZ7 strain contains a variant gene encoding a polypeptide of 16 kDa. The viral polypeptides are only 41.1 % identical with each other and show little homology at the nucleotide level.
