The monoclonal antibody of this name, raised against malignant melanoma cells (Lehmann et al, 1987), recognizes a 113 kDa sialylated glycoprotein antigen on melanoma cells. The antigen shows sequence similarity to the neural cell adhesion molecule NCAM (Lehmann et al, 1989). The cloned cDNA encodes a protein of 603 amino acids. The same antigen is recognized also by the P1H12 and A32 monoclonal antibodies. In various publications, the terms METCAM or METCAM/MUC18 are used synonymously.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this antigen has received the designation CD146.
