Monoclonal antibody P1H12 recognizes circulating endothelial cells and endothelia of all sizes of blood vessels. Solovey et al (2001) have cloned the cDNA encoding the protein recognized by this antibody. The P1H12 antigen is identical, except at several bases, to that reported for the melanoma cell surface antigen MUC18. Aggregation assays demonstrate that the protein mediates Ca(++)-independent homotypic endothelial cell adhesion. The antibody blocks interactions between human microvascular endothelial cells but not between human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
