[neural cell adhesion molecule] The neural adhesion protein NCAM (gene symbol NCAM1 [neural cell adhesion molecule-1]) belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily of proteins. It exists in three variants arising from alternative splicing. According to their molecular weights, these variants are known as NCAM-120 [neural cell adhesion molecule-120], NCAM-140 [neural cell adhesion molecule-140], and NCAM-180 [neural cell adhesion molecule-180] (Doherty and Walsh, 1992; Tacke and Goridis, 1991). The CD antigen designation for NCAM is CD56. For a related molecule see also: NCAM2.
