Frankly speaking, synonyms are a pain in the neck when it comes to reading scientific articles but I suppose that you know that yourself (see also: nomenclature). An added twist to synonyms found in databanks is the plethora of names stemming from submitted sequences that subsequently are used rarely. If I take a positive view, this may come from a) the rush to get the sequence out and b) the realization that subsequently it would be better to use a different name
