The Caenorhabditis elegans gene CED5 has been isolated initially as a gene affecting the elimination of cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Ellis et al, 1991). The mammalian homolog of CED5 is DOCK180 (see also: CDM).
CED5 has been shown to bind to another Caenorhabditis elegans protein, CED12. This complex causes the activation of a third gene product, CED10 (RAC1 homolog), and this, in turn, leads to rearrangements of the cytoskeleton.
