[Cell death protein 10] The Caenorhabditis elegans gene CED10 has been isolated initially as a gene affecting the elimination of cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Ellis et al, 1991) (see also: efferocytosis). CED10 encodes a protein similar to the human GTPase Rac. CED10 together with CED2 functions in engulfing cells, rather than dying cells, to control the phagocytosis of cell corpses by promoting the reorganization of the cytoskeleton during engulfment (Lundquist et al, 2001; Reddien and Horvitz, 2000).
