[Cell death abnormality protein 12] The Caenorhabditis elegans gene CED12 encodes a protein that is required for the engulfment of dying cells (see also: efferocytosis) and for cell migrations. The mammalian homolog of CED12 corresponds to ELMO3 and is related to ELMO1 and ELMO2. The functions of these proteins and their interaction partners have been conserved in evolution (Gumienny et al, 2001). CED12 encodes a protein with a PH domain (pleckstrin homology domain) and an SH3 binding motif, both of which are important for CED12 function.
