This microscopic (approx.1 mm) nematode is one of the model organisms used in biology. It normally lives in the soil but it can be raised in Petri dishes (fed on Escherichia coli), This roundworm reproduces rapidly, has many physiological and molecular features (cell differentiation, aging, programmed cell death) also found in mice and humans.
The organism is transparent, which makes it an excellent system for cell studies beginning with the fertilized egg up to the fully developed worm. Cell fate maps have been worked out that trace the lineage of every single somatic cell in the worm. 1090 cells are produced in the developing embryo. 131 of these cells
