The monoclonal antibody of this name (acronym for monoclonal, Duke University) has been described by Haynes et al, 1981. The antibody recognizes the same antigen as antibody 4F2. This antigen is a lymphocyte activation antigen. The cDNA sequence encoding the 4F2 antigen (Lumadue et al, 1987) encodes a protein of 529 amino acids expressed in various organs and cell types (skin, lung, keratinocytes in the basal layer, fibrosarcomas, osteosarcomas, rhabdomyosarcomas). The protein corresponds to the heavy chain of the cell surface antigen CD98.
