Keratinocytes (not to be confused with keratocytes) are stratified squamous epithelial cells and constitute the largest population of epidermal cells in the skin but are found also in mucosa, oral, esophageal, corneal, conjunctival, and genital epithelia. These cells produce keratins and provide a physical barrier between host and environment. The cells differentiate as they move from the basal layer to the skin surface. Early keratinocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis represent stem cells that are called also basal cells or foot cells.
Keratinocytes have been shown to possess the capacity to express the proteins listed below.
