This lymphocyte activation antigen is identified by a monoclonal antibody of the same name (Haynes et al, 1981). 4F2 recognizes the heavy chain (hence the designation 4F2hc) of a 120 kDa cell surface antigen expressed on human T-cell and B-cell lymphoblastoid cell lines (Hemler and Strominger, 1982). The gene encoding this antigen has been cloned by Lumadue et al (1987) and Gottesdiener et al (1998). The light chain, designated 4F2lc has been shown to be identical with MPE16 [membrane protein E16].
