A biochemically poorly characterized factor of approximately 20 kDa found in the conditioned medium of the J774A.1 macrophage cell line and purified partially by its affinity towards heparin. The protein is a heparin-binding growth factor that possesses substantial mitogenic activity for osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and smooth muscle cells, but is not mitogenic for fibroblasts, 3T3 cells, and NRK cells. HEP II is not identical with IL1 (Cheng et al, 1987). HEP II appears to be a unique bone cell mitogen and is not identical with fibroblast growth factors,
