An aneuploid murine cell line with a morphology resembling fibroblasts (Aaronson and Todaro, 1968; Todaro and Green, 1963). The name 3T3 derives from very early studies of the behavior of primary murine cell cultures, which were found to grow much better and longer if subcultivated at low cell density (3x10**5 cells/dish) every three days (3T3 protocol). Accordingly, "3T3" cell lines have been established from primary cultures of murine embryos of different strains, for example, BALB/c and Swiss mice, and are, therefore, being referred to as BALB/c 3T3 cells and Swiss 3T3 cells, respectively.
