[blast cell]
name given to an immature, least undifferentiated stage in the developmental hierarchy of hematopoietic cells. These cells, often simply referred to as blasts, are devoid of any definitive characteristics that would mark them as belonging to any of the known hematopoietic lineages. They are, therefore, not committed to any particular lineage and appear to be more primitive than CFU-GEMM. This does not imply that these cells are true totipotent hematopoietic stem cells (see also: Blast colony-forming cells).
BL-CFC (blast colony-forming cells) has been used as a term to describe bipotential hemangioblasts
