Also: blood cells, hemopoietic cells. A collective term for all bone marrow-derived cell types in the blood (see also: hematopoiesis). This term refers to mature cell types and their immature precursors that are identifiable either by morphology or, mostly, by a distinct pattern of cell surface markers. The term is used to distinguish these cells from other cell types found in the body and also includes T-cells and distinctive subsets, which are the only hematopoietic cells that are not generated in the bone marrow.
