abbr. BKL. The approved gene symbol is KLB [Klotho-beta]. The partial human and the full-length mouse cDNA have been identified by Ito et al (2000) by virtue of sequence homology with Klotho. Like Klotho, Beta-Klotho is a single-pass transmembrane protein.
FGF21 binds directly to beta-Klotho through its C-terminus (Yie et al, 2009). Ogawa et al (2007) have reported that Beta-Klotho is required for cells to respond to FGF21. FGF21 requires Beta-Klotho to bind to the FGFR1c and FGFR4 receptors. The stimulation of glucose uptake in adipocytes by FGF21
