[adipocyte, adipocyte-derived]
These cells are called also fat cells, adipose cells, mature adipose cells, or lipocytes. Mature adipocytes do not divide but are derived from undifferentiated precursor cells found in the stromal-vascular fraction of adipose tissue that will terminally differentiate under appropriate conditions (Gregoire et al, 1998). Throughout the lifespan of an organism mature adipocytes arise from the differentiation of pre-adipocyte precursor cells present in adipose tissue (Cinti et al, 2011; Gregoire, 2001; Hansen and Kristiansen, 2006; Macdougald and Mandrup, 2002; Rosen and MacDougald, 2006).
