The Klotho gene has been identified by Kuro-o et al (1997). The Klotho protein is a large single-pass transmembrane protein (130 kDa) with a very short intracellular domain (10 amino acids).
The approved gene symbol is KL (an abbreviation that also has other meanings). The protein is being referred to also as Alpha-Klotho (abbr. alpha-KL, a-KL; abbr. sometimes KLA ) to distinguish it from related genes known as Beta-Klotho and Gamma-Klotho.
