stem cell niche

This widely used general term simply refers to the tissue-specific or organ-specific supportive micro-environment (composition and architecture) in which stem cells are found, which is instrumental in maintaining the stem cell character (the stemness) of these cells. This environment is essential for regulating self-renewal and cell differentiation of stem cells through cell-to-cell contacts with resident cell types and/or paracrine signaling (Chen et al, 2013; Sing, 2012; Brizzi et al, 2012; Park et al, 2012; Kiefer, 2011; Vazin and Schjaffer, 2010; Ellis and Tanentzapf, 2010; Walker et al, 2009), or hormonal control (Gancz and Gilboa, 2013). See also: hematopoietic stem cell niche.
