[stem cell]
Stem cells are undifferentiated totipotent cells that retain the ability to divide and proliferate throughout postnatal life. They undergo mitotic division to produce two types of cells. Some stem cell daughter cells remain stem cells and retain their totipotent nature. Other stem cell daughter cells (progenitor cells) eventually give rise to more differentiated and specialized cells, some of which still retain some, but not all, characteristics of the totipotent cells and usually are restricted in their differentiation potential. For dyes allowing the identification of cells with stem cell character see also: Rhodamine-123, Hoechst 33342, CDy1
