a noun pertaining to the ability of cells to behave like true stem cells, i. e. to undergo asymmetric cell division that yields two types of daughter cells, namely those that retain their totipotent nature (self-renewal), and those (progenitor cells) that have a restricted differentiation potential (see also: MRA [marrow repopulating ability]). This concept of stemness also appears to apply to many cancers (see: neoplastic stem cells).
