Called also: nursing cells. Nurse cells are defined operationally as cells that provide a microenvironment for the development of other cells, for example by providing development and/or survival signals. A classical example is Sertoli cells and ovarian follicle cells. For other examples see: trophocytes, ovarian cystocytes, Thymic nurse cells (thymus epithelial cells), and Nurse macrophages, self-renewing monocytoid cells. See also: supporting cells.
The term nurse-like cells has been used to refer to B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia nurse-like cells
