Called also: sustentacular cells. A very general term pertaining to the known or suspected function of various cell types in different organs. Some example of supporting cells are pillar cells and phalangeal cells in the organ of Corti, dark cells and light cells in the taste buds, and Sertoli cells. In the sense of support, stromal cells would be supporting cells. Essentially, supporting cells perform the function of nurse cells although this term is usually used in a more restrictive sence.
