[Thymic nurse cell, TNCs]
abbr. TNC (a term with multiple meanings). Thymic nurse cells were reported originally in mice as keratin-expressing cells containing several thymocytes completely enclosed within specialized cytoplasmic vacuoles (Wekerle and Ketelson, 1980: Wekerle et al, 1980). Following their initial discovery in mice, thymic nurse cells have been identified also in the thymuses of fish (Flaño et al, 1996; Romano et al, 1999; Mohammad et al, 2007), frogs (Holtfreter and Cohen 1987), chicken (Rieker et al, 1995; Boyd et al, 1984), rats (Ezaki and Uehara, 1997), and humans (Ritter et al, 1981; Dipasquale and Tridente, 1991).
