[self-renewing monocytoid cell]
abbr. SRMCs. This cell type has been described by Gartner et al (2012). It is said to develop within and is released from a macrophage, and is renewed via cycles of self-renewing monocytoid cell / nurse macrophage development, with nurse macrophages producing another generation of such self-renewing cells. Self-renewing monocytoid cells are not detectable in blood. Their transition to nurse cell behaviour is characterized by expression of CD10, a marker of thymic epithelium and bone marrow stroma, typically absent on macrophages. Self-renewing monocytoid cells express CCR5, the co-receptor
