The term mammospheres, in analogy to neurospheres, pertains to nonadherent spherical colonies obtained in cultures of human mammary epithelial cells gron on nonadherent surfaces in the presence of growth factors (Dontu et al, 2003). Mammospheres are enriched in cells with functional characteristics of stem cells and progenitor cells and can be used for their enrichment. Similarly, spheroids have been obtained also from other tissues (see also: sphere forming assay).
