this general term is used for pluripotent stem cells that, in the course of proliferative processes, have lost their capacity for self-renewal and some of their ability to differentiate along several different pathways (see also: hematopoietic stem cells). Thus, progenitor cells are more differentiated than stem cells.
These cells arise from less differentiated multipotential stem cells and are also referred to as committed stem cells or, simply, progenitors. Thus, these cells constitute the progeny of stem cells.
