limbal stem cells |
Neurexophilin-3 |
||
These cells have been identified by Shanmuganathan et al (2007). They are located in an anatomical structure at the limbus in corneo-scleral rims that has been termed limbal epithelial crypt. Cells within the crypt are CK3(-) CK19(+) CD 34(-), express Vimentin, p63, Connexin-43, and Ki67. It has been suggested that these cells may constitute a stem cell niche (Shanmuganathan et al, 2007; Yeung et al, 2009), and this view that is supported by gene expression studies showing expression of a number of genes known to be involved in stem cell maintenance that are expressed in the limbal epithelial crypt (Kulkarni et al, 2010).
