This general term describes the processes of transcription and translation, i.e., the formation of mRNA mediated by specific RNA polymerases and transcription factors, and the formation of proteins, guided by mRNA sequences at the ribosomes, respectively. The mRNA transcribed from a gene (see also: orf), and also the protein obtained by translation of this mRNA are generally referred to as the gene products. The term heterologous gene expression usually refers to the production of recombinant gene products in cells of another species (see: Recombinant cytokines for expression systems and Gene library for a brief and very basic discussion of cloning
