Histone H2A is one of the core components of nucleosome that compact DNA into chromatin (DeLange and Smith, 1971). Histone H2A exists in many different variants that are abundant components of chromatin and, by replacing canonical histones in a subset of nucleosomes, alter nucleosomal characteristics (Millar, 2013; Bönisch and Hake, 2012).
Role as moonlighting protein
Apart from its role in chromatin, Histone H2A has other functions and thus can be regarded as a member of a growing group of proteins referred to as moonlighting proteins.
