Acipensins constitute a set of six antimicrobial peptides from leukocytes of the Russian sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii belonging to a subclass of chondrosteans, an ancient group of bony fish (Shamova et al, 2014). These peptide are N-terminally acetylated fragments of Histone H2A most closely related to halibut Hipposin. They are thought to play a role in innate immunity against microbial infections. For bioactive fragments of histone proteins see also: HDAPs [Histone-derived antimicrobial peptides].
Acipensin-1 (SGRGKTGGKARAKAKTRSSRAGLQFPVGRVHRLLRKGNYAQRVGAGAPVY) corresponds to Histone H2A(1-50)
