[moonlighting protein]
This term is being used (increasingly) to refer to proteins, called also multifunctional proteins or multitasking proteins, that deviate from the canonical one structure-one function concept and combine at least two unrelated and independent functions in a single polypeptide chain (Jeffrey, 2009; Huberts and van der Klei, 2010; Jeffery et al, 2018). Some of these proteins may be known mainly for their (well-established) intracellular function but exhibit alternative functions and appear to have activities outside of the cell (including immune functions unrelated to their intracellular activities). In many instances, these multiple functions are conserved across species. It is noteworthy that these multiple functions are not resulting from activities of splice variants or individual protein domains.
