This cell type has been described by Rieke et al (1963) who studied the cell types in the mesenteric lymph node of rats. Hemohistioblasts are rapidly proliferating cells and differ morphologically from cells described as hemocytoblasts and Ferrata cells. They may represent some kind of precursor cells for lymphocytes although its stem cell nature cannot be verified by histological descriptions. Hemohistioblasts are scored frequently as reticulum cells (fixed tissue cells) by clinical hematologists.
