These cells, called also reticular cells, expand a three-dimensional network (reticulum) of cytoplasmic extensions (hence the name). These cells form the framework of lymph nodes, bone marrow, and spleen. Some histologists refer to these cells also as reticulocytes (which are different from the immature red blood cells).
The term is not very specific and may refer to professional antigen-presenting cells known as dendritic cells, fibroblasts, or macrophages and possibly other cells types that have not been characterized. Hemocytoblasts and hemohistioblasts
