[Ferrata cell]
This undifferentiated cell type has been described by Ferrata (1918). The term is not used any longer.
Ferrata's report is an early morphologic description of what may be a hematopoietic stem cell (see also: hematopoiesis) although such cells cannot be distinguished from other cell types by morphology (for a discussion see: Baserga and Zavagli, 1981). Rieke et al (1963) have pointed out that these cells differ morphologically from hemohistioblasts and hemocytoblasts.
