[94 kDa glucose-regulated protein] This protein is related to one of the heat shock proteins, hsp90 (Gupta, 1995) and is found in vertebrates and some invertebrates like Caenorhabditis elegans, and in plants (Argon and Simen, 1999). It is a glycoprotein of 96 kDa localized to the endoplasmic reticulum but can be present also at the cell surface (Robert et al, 1999). The C-terminal end of the protein contains an ER retention sequence, KDEL (Maki et al, 1990). In some cell types the protein is phosphorylated (Welch et al, 1983) and is a substrate for casein kinase 2 (Cala and Jones, 1994).
