The carboxy-terminal amino acid sequence KDEL (Lys-Asp-Glu-Leu) is a signal for permanent retention of proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (Munro and Pelham, 1987; Pelham 1988; Ellgard et al, 1999). The KDEL sequence is recognized by a membrane-bound receptor that continually retrieves the proteins from a later compartment of the secretory pathway and returns them to the endoplasmic reticulum (Pelham, 1990).
