This term was used first to describe Drosophila melanogaster proteins expressed at elevated temperatures (Tissieres et al, 1974). It is a collective term for a number of ubiquitously expressed and highly conserved cytoprotective eukaryotic and bacterial proteins. Heat shock proteins usually have no trivial names but are named according to their approximate molecular mass (hsp60, hsp70, hsp90 etc).
