[facultative stem cell]
The term Facultative stem cells (sometimes reserve stem cells; see also: differentiated cells) pertains to cells that normally lack stem cell activity during normal tissue turnover but are recruited in response to specific types of injury to function as stem cells or progenitor cells (Yanger and Stanger, 2011). It is thought that oval cells are facultative stem cells. Pancreatic ductal cells, which can develop into beta-cells, also appear to behave as facultative stem cells. Yanger et al (2014) have reported that hepatocytes rather than biliary cells
