[differentiated cell]
a differentiated cell is a cell in a multicellular organism that is specialized in its functions, which it may perform in a certain organ or tissue. Differentiated cells are generated during a developmental process that begins with a fertilized egg. At a very early stage of development, i.e., after a few cell divisions, these cells have already become more specialized, i.e., they have lost their capacity to develop into any of the different specialized cell types found in the body. Thus, cells in the primary tissue layers of a developing embryo (mesoderm, endoderm, ectoderm) are already restricted in their developmental capacities and will give rise to distinct cell types and organ systems.
