These cells are found in the liver after extensive tissue injury and appear to constitute a kind of facultative hepatic stem cell or commited progenitor cell type that can differentiate into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes (Lowes et al, 2003). These cells therefore are bipotential transit-amplifying cells (Alison et al, 2004). See also: hepatoblasts, facultative stem cells.
