[elliptocyte]
a term pertaining to elongated erythrocytes, a shape form that differs from normal shapes (discocytes) by the oval form of the cells. Histologists refer to these cells also as cameloid cells. See also: ovalocytes.
Hereditary elliptocytosis has been shown to be caused by deletions in the gene encoding glycophorin C (glycophorin D) (Telen et al, 1991), leading to an absence of both proteins. This glycophorin deficiency is known as the Leach phenotype.
