ovalocytes

[ovalocyte]

an aberrant shape form of erythrocytes, called also elliptocytes or cameloid cells. See also: poikilocytes for other aberrant shape forms and discocytes for normal erythrocyte morphologies.

Ovalocytes have been observed in some clinical conditions such as chronic myeloid leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia (Perrotta et al, 2001), hepatic diseases (Christopher and Lee, 1994).

Hereditary elliptocytosis (Gallagher, 2004) involves alterations of proteins of the membrane skeleton (Spectrin and protein 4.1) (Bassères et al, 1998; Pranke et al, 1996; Eber et al, 1988; Gallagher, 2004; Facer, 2005; Lecomte et al, 1993; Alloisio et al, 1985; Feo et al, 1980).
