approved gene symbol GYPC. Abbr. GPC. The glycophorin C gene has been cloned by High et al (1989), who refer to it as sialoglycoprotein-beta (abbr. SGP-beta). High et al (1989) have shown also that the two variants that give rise to the Yus blood group antigen and the Gerbich blood group antigen are caused by deletions in exon 2 and exon 3, respectively.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD236R.
