Also: discocytic erythrocytes. A term pertaining to the normal biconcave shape of red blood cells (erythrocytes). Normally sized erythrocytes are also being referred to as normocytes. Those larger than standard erythrocytes are macrocytes; those that are smaller are microcytes. Erythrocytes of various sizes are being referred to as anisocytes.
A variety of morphological variants of erythrocytes have been described (Bacus et al, 1976; Dumez et al, 2004). Some of these maintain the original disc shape and are size variants, others have altered shapes but retain their sizes.
